As a quilt maker (almost exclusively) I was nervous above diving into the bag-making world when I needed a new laptop bag. This pattern was refreshingly easy to follow and to understand, even for someone like me who is used to working in the world of 2D. The areas I was most nervous for (ie. zippers!) was surprisingly simple to sew.
It was so much fun to watch this bag come together before my eyes!
Very nice and love the pun! Your Morning Post is outstanding! So happy that you have dived in-we think you made quite the splash with your first endeavor. Thank you so much for the great review. My son asked for a laptop bag. I showed him this pattern and he said it was perfect. It is! Made with vinyl and cotton for lining. He was super excited and it made up beautifully.
So happy to hear that it was the perfect pattern for what you needed. Thank you for the review. If not a member, you may want to join our Sallie Tomato Patterns and Hardware group to show off your makes and inspiration.
Great pattern! Thorough instructions, didn’t have to look at the tutorial. The most challenging part is doing the final assembly and binding as there are lots of layers to go through. Not difficult to understand but I did break a sweat trying to manhandle everything.
So happy to hear this Jenny. Love seeing all the pictures that you provided. lf not a member yet- we have a great Facebook group-Sallie Tomato Patterns and Hardware group to join to show off your makes and more inspiration. Happy Sewing!
This bag is so cute!
Full disclosure: this is the first bag I've attempted. And I'm only a beginner. My great-grandmother taught me the basics when I was a girl, but if you look closely I'm clumsy with the machine and my stitches. (And shame on me, I broke a needle there at the end.) But dang it if this bag isn't super cute. I love this pattern!
The fabric I chose is a cotton canvas, inside and out. I designed it and had it printed. (It's me, my husband and our fur babies.)
The pattern instructions were ok for me to follow, along with the video tutorial. Thank you for that. I didn't understand the binding bit, which I think that is more my newbie status than the instructions. And I got too excited to finish it!
This bag was challenging! But I did it!! It took about two days.
I don't know if this is me being silly but I didn't see a measurement for piece I, so I kinda winged it there by making it about the length of H (14 inches) by 2 3/4 inches.
Thank you Megan for your review of the pattern. You are to be commended for trying this pattern and learning so much. Just take your time and you will do fine-I am sure that your Great Grandmother is a wonderful teacher for you. The pattern piece for 'I' is on page 5 for future reference. Also-if not a member- we have a great Facebook group-Sallie Tomato Patterns and Hardware group to join to show off your makes and more inspiration. Happy Sewing!
I found this a quick and well-written pattern. I did add a padded slip pocket to the inside so I could also carry my ipad. Love the finished product in pink leather and quilting cotton.
Thank you for your praises. We are glad that you found it easy to make. Please like our Youtube channel so you do not miss out on new tutorials as well as I recommend joining our Sallie Tomato Patterns and Hardware group for more inspiration
Who we are
sallie tomato
Hey friend! I'm Jess, the Founder of Sallie Tomato. I originally opened my shop in 2014 during college. I began by selling items that I had sewn myself. It wasn’t until 2016 that I released my first pattern, the Puppy Pillow. Now, my passion is to design quality sewing patterns, so you can create too!
Sallie Tomato provides sewing patterns, purse hardware, handbag zippers, cork fabric, and select sewing supplies for bag making.
The name of my shop developed around my middle name, Sallie. Also, the tomato pin cushion is a well-recognized symbol of sewing. Thank you for visiting my website!
