Most patterns are measured and cut, which means that the pieces will need to be cut with a rotary cutter, ruler, and cutting mat. Some patterns may include templates for shaping and/or cutting out the pieces.

Trace or photocopy the pattern piece(s) onto a separate sheet of paper. If printing or copying template(s), print at 100% or actual size. Measure the test square provided in the pattern to ensure the pieces are the correct size. Tape corresponding pieces together before cutting fabric, aligning red lines, shapes, and outer edges. It’s also helpful to write the name and cutting instructions on each pattern piece. Cut out pattern pieces along solid black lines, unless otherwise stated.

Fun functional bag

This is my first Sallie Tomato bag pattern. The bag comes together relatively quickly. The video is helpful to fill in a minor gaps in the instructions. I am making a second bag and I have adjusted the pattern to have 1" less length on the zipper and top gusset and have added that 1" to the bottom gusset because my foam is 20" wide and the pattern calls for 21" of foam. In my mind it make more sense to be able to cut the foam WOF.

Thank you so much for sharing your experience with the Sallie Tomato pattern—we love that you dove right in and made it your own! It's fantastic to hear the bag came together quickly and that the video helped fill in any small gaps. Your thoughtful modification to accommodate the foam width is such a smart solution, and we admire your resourcefulness in adjusting the gussets.

We’re thrilled you’re already making a second bag—it’s so rewarding to see your ideas take shape! If you feel like sharing your great photos of your beautiful bag and tips from your version, we know it would inspire others in our maker community-please post to the Sallie Tomato Patterns and Hardware Group on Facebook. Happy Sewing!

Love it!

I’ve been eyeing this pattern ever since I saw it on MSQC. The pattern was well designed; pieces fit together easily. The videos were especially helpful. It was perfect size for my vacation walkabouts.

Thank you so much for the glowing feedback! We're thrilled to hear you purchased the pattern and the ease of assembly and great video support make such a difference in the sewing experience. ✨

We're especially glad it turned out to be the perfect size for your vacation walkabouts—that’s exactly the kind of real-world usefulness we aim for in every design. Whether it's style, function, or travel-readiness, it sounds like this one ticked all the boxes! It turned out beautiful -we love that travel fabric that you chose--and we would love to have you share it in our Sallie Tomato Patterns and Hardware group on Facebook.

Thanks again for sharing your experience. Happy sewing.

I really love this pattern.

This size holds enough but is not so big it looks overwhelming. My fabric was not cork so it did not iron smooth. It's okay when I use it, it will puff out some the wrinkles. Love the webbing that is Sallie tomato. Fabric is some I was given to me by a friend. It was used for covering stools. I think it is great for a bag too.

We are delighted to hear this-we think it turned out so beautiful. It looks to have a beautiful patina to it. I hope that you love using the bag. We appreciate your review.
