I made the Connie backpack for my granddaughter who will be starting college in the fall. We both love it! I was impressed how professional looking it came out! What I didn't like was the fact that the video and written instructions were not very helpful in some places, most especially the liner.
Thank you for sharing your experience with the Connie backpack! We're so glad to hear it was a hit for your granddaughter’s big milestone—what a special gift to send her off to college with. It’s wonderful that the finished bag looked so professional!
We also truly appreciate your honest feedback about the instructions. We’re always looking for ways to improve, and your insight about the liner section is valuable. We'll take a closer look at that to help make the process smoother for all makers. Thanks again for your thoughtful review and for being part of the Sallie Tomato community!
The finished backpack is great. I used ripstop nylon for all the fabric. This is not recommended and maybe is responsible for the problem with the gusset length. The bottom gusset was 2” too long after clipping the top/zipper gusset to the front/back pieces. After contacting Sallie Tomato and learning that I had not done something wrong, I cut the bottom gusset in the middle and took up the 2” with a seam. I topstitched on both sides of the seam then trimmed the seam allowances. It looks great. The foam gives it nice stability. Will make it again.

I haven't made it yet but based on the other patterns I've used from Sallie Tomato I'm excited about it.

My first backpack was made for my girlfriend from Hawaii who plays pickleball 🌺. It turned out so cute with a green Fern print for the main fabric and hula dance ladies for lining fabric. This bag was quick to make. So I'm making one for my neices birthday this month and will combine a purple faux leather with some fabric for the main outer bag. 🥰
Thank you for the review-we are so glad that it turned out great! Excited to see your next one in purple. Please join our Sallie Tomato Patterns and Hardware Group on Facebook to post your makes.

sallie tomato
Hey friend! I'm Jess, the Founder of Sallie Tomato. I originally opened my shop in 2014 during college. I began by selling items that I had sewn myself. It wasn’t until 2016 that I released my first pattern, the Puppy Pillow. Now, my passion is to design quality sewing patterns, so you can create too!
Sallie Tomato provides sewing patterns, purse hardware, handbag zippers, cork fabric, and select sewing supplies for bag making.
The name of my shop developed around my middle name, Sallie. Also, the tomato pin cushion is a well-recognized symbol of sewing. Thank you for visiting my website!
