Connie is a practical backpack tote which makes for a great hands free bag! This pattern has been cleverly designed to avoid using any bias binding. The name and design of this backpack was inspired by the movie, Palm Springs Weekend.

FINISHED SIZE: Choose between two sizes, full or mini. The finished size of the mini is 9" wide, 12" high, and 3" deep. The finished size of the full is 11" wide, 15" high, and 4" deep.

PATTERN DIFFICULTY: 3 Intermediate

FEATURES: Carry handles, an exterior slip pocket, covered front zipper pocket, adjustable straps, double slide zipper top closure, and optional mesh pockets

HARDWARE REQUIRED: The only hardware required is a set of Ladder Lock Buckles for the adjustable padded straps.

ZIPPER REQUIRED: This pattern requires a 8” single slide and 18” (or longer) single slide zipper for the mini, 10” single slide and 22” (or longer) double slide zipper for the full. Included with this purchase is the pattern cover and the pattern instructions. Each of our patterns are complete with step-by-step illustrations to help make the written directions easier to understand. Included are many sewing techniques and tips to help you achieve a quality, finished project. Each pattern is designed to help you learn and expand your sewing skills!

Most patterns are measured and cut, which means that the pieces will need to be cut with a rotary cutter, ruler, and cutting mat. Some patterns may include templates for shaping and/or cutting out the pieces.

Trace or photocopy the pattern piece(s) onto a separate sheet of paper. If printing or copying template(s), print at 100% or actual size. Measure the test square provided in the pattern to ensure the pieces are the correct size. Tape corresponding pieces together before cutting fabric, aligning red lines, shapes, and outer edges. It’s also helpful to write the name and cutting instructions on each pattern piece. Cut out pattern pieces along solid black lines, unless otherwise stated.

Love this backpack but instructions need work

I made the Connie backpack for my granddaughter who will be starting college in the fall. We both love it! I was impressed how professional looking it came out! What I didn't like was the fact that the video and written instructions were not very helpful in some places, most especially the liner.

Great backpack - slight problem with gusset length

The finished backpack is great. I used ripstop nylon for all the fabric. This is not recommended and maybe is responsible for the problem with the gusset length. The bottom gusset was 2” too long after clipping the top/zipper gusset to the front/back pieces. After contacting Sallie Tomato and learning that I had not done something wrong, I cut the bottom gusset in the middle and took up the 2” with a seam. I topstitched on both sides of the seam then trimmed the seam allowances. It looks great. The foam gives it nice stability. Will make it again.

Cute Back Pack 😍

My first backpack was made for my girlfriend from Hawaii who plays pickleball 🌺. It turned out so cute with a green Fern print for the main fabric and hula dance ladies for lining fabric. This bag was quick to make. So I'm making one for my neices birthday this month and will combine a purple faux leather with some fabric for the main outer bag. 🥰
