It's helpful to understand the difference between faux leather and vinyl when shopping for fabric. There are two major types of faux leather: vinyl-based and polyurethane-based. Our faux leather is polyurethane-based. Vinyl-based is dyed plastic. Examples are marine vinyl and clear vinyl. Polyurethane-based is made by coating natural fabrics like cotton or polyester, then treating it to look like real leather. This type of faux leather is more soft, flexible, and breathable than vinyl-based leather.
Faux leather is sold in 1/4 yard (9 inch) increments. We will cut a continuous piece if available. This material measures 25-27″ wide.
In order to maintain this fabric’s quality, our faux leather fabric is rolled, sealed in a plastic bag, and packaged to protect it during shipping. We will never fold this fabric to prevent creases.
If you feel the need to iron out any wrinkles, set your iron to a LOW or SYNTHETIC heat setting. You can carefully iron faux leather from the WRONG SIDE of the fabric, using a press cloth. Do not use any steam – it will detach the bond.
It is recommended to start each project with a new needle. Use a Denim Needle, size 90/14 or 80/12 to sew through faux leather! Use Sewing Clips instead of pins, because pins will leave holes in your faux leather.
If you’re finding that your fabric is sticking to your foot, you have a few options. First, you can change your presser foot to either a Teflon foot or a roller foot. If you don't have a Teflon or roller foot, add a small piece of matte tape to the bottom of your presser foot. Otherwise, you can add a layer of tissue paper between your foot and your fabric while you sew to prevent sticking. The tissue paper can be torn away after sewing.
