Even though I am just starting out with sewing, I accomplished this challenge. I still have to figure out how to make the fabric glide and not stick to the machine. I used a Teflon foot and it still stuck. I used tissue paper, tape, you name it, but it kept sticking. I adjusted the machine tensions and nothing worked. For the next tote bag, I will buy a roller foot to try again. But after so many challenges, I achieved my tote bag. Thanks Sallie for the tutorial and the materials. Greetings from Puerto Rico!
**Thank you so much, Yari!**
Congratulations on completing your Back to Basics Tote—what an amazing personal milestone, especially as someone just starting out with sewing. Your determination really shines through, and we’re so glad the tutorial and materials were helpful along the way. It turned out beautiful and we hope you love using it.
Sticky fabric can be *so* frustrating, even with a Teflon foot, so you’re not alone in that experience. A roller foot is a great next step to try, and many makers find it gives that extra glide on tricky materials. We love that you kept experimenting and didn’t give up. Your perseverance paid off beautifully.
Sending warm greetings right back to you in Puerto Rico, and if you ever want to share a photo of your finished tote, we’d be thrilled to see it in the Sallie Tomato Facebook group. Your journey will inspire so many others.
Love this bag. It has plenty of room in it. I made it with faux leather.
Thank you so much, Teri!

Who we are
sallie tomato
Hey friend! I'm Jess, the Founder of Sallie Tomato. I originally opened my shop in 2014 during college. I began by selling items that I had sewn myself. It wasn’t until 2016 that I released my first pattern, the Puppy Pillow. Now, my passion is to design quality sewing patterns, so you can create too!
Sallie Tomato provides sewing patterns, purse hardware, handbag zippers, cork fabric, and select sewing supplies for bag making.
The name of my shop developed around my middle name, Sallie. Also, the tomato pin cushion is a well-recognized symbol of sewing. Thank you for visiting my website!
