I’ve made bags before, but I had to go between the written directions and the video more times than I can count. I thought yardage requirements were confusing as well. The bag turned out fine, my niece loves it, but it was a definite struggle.
Thank you so much for your honest feedback, Frances. I’m really glad your Casey bag turned out beautifully and that your niece loves it — that makes all the effort worthwhile. I’m sorry the instructions and yardage requirements felt confusing, though. Switching back and forth between the written steps and the video can be frustrating, especially when you’ve made bags before. I truly appreciate you sharing your experience, and I’ll be sure to pass this along to our team so we can keep improving.
If you ever want extra support or tips along the way, we’d love to have you join the Sallie Tomato Facebook Group — it’s a wonderful place to ask questions and get help from fellow makers.
Good pattern, easy to follow.
However DO NOT use quilted cotton fabric for the outside. It’s too bulky for seams. Making another one eliminating foam and heavy interfacing.
Thank you so much, Deb! We love your version and so happy you shared it here. We’re glad to hear you enjoyed the Casey pattern and found the instructions easy to follow. Quilted cotton can definitely add extra bulk at the seams, so we appreciate you sharing your experience. If you’re looking for a lighter alternative, you may want to try our Sallie Tomato Air Mesh — it gives great structure without the added thickness. We’d love to see your next version in our Sallie Tomato Patterns & Hardware Facebook group! ✨
This pattern is simple and luxurious. The pattern came together so well and has a luxury look. I did mine in faux leather and it turned out great! The hardware kit made it even easier
Your Casey turned out outstanding! It is so high end looking and we are glad to hear that the hardware kit made it easy to have what you needed. If not a member-you may want to join our Sallie Tomato Patterns and Hardware Group on Facebook-to show off your makes and more inspiration. Happy sewing and thank you!
While the bag was more challenging than expected due to challenges with the materials I chose for my domestic machine I’d still say confident beginner. It was my 4th bag ever and by far the biggest. I added a couple organization pouches and a wet bag for a complete travel set. I’ll make one again for myself.
Diane, your bag and extra accessories are outstanding. Thank you for the review and sharing. We also have a great Facebook group-Sallie Tomato Patterns and Hardware group to join to show off your makes and more inspiration. Happy Sewing!
A bit complicated but worth the effort!
I made two bags. I’d get through a few steps on one bag then repeat on the second bag.
Thanks for the directions and tutorial!
So glad you were able to make 2 of these bags. We appreciate your review. We also have a great Facebook group-Sallie Tomato Patterns and Hardware group to join to show off your makes and more inspiration. Happy Sewing!
Who we are
sallie tomato
Hey friend! I'm Jess, the Founder of Sallie Tomato. I originally opened my shop in 2014 during college. I began by selling items that I had sewn myself. It wasn’t until 2016 that I released my first pattern, the Puppy Pillow. Now, my passion is to design quality sewing patterns, so you can create too!
Sallie Tomato provides sewing patterns, purse hardware, handbag zippers, cork fabric, and select sewing supplies for bag making.
The name of my shop developed around my middle name, Sallie. Also, the tomato pin cushion is a well-recognized symbol of sewing. Thank you for visiting my website!
