Great bag, so easy to sew. Many of my friends have asked me to make them one. I did a few upgrades as I made it, I lined it, added a zipper closure inside incase just for safety, magnets at the top(they are wonderful and VERY STRONG. Added a strap inside to hold keys and fob. Actually put another outside pocket on both sides of bag. Love this bag and so versatile, great size and goes anywhere🤩

This Back to Basics Tote was super easy and lots of fun to make! And the best part is that is is FREE!! LOL! I think, when I make another, I will try to topstitch the seams of the sides as it just wanted to roll in (at least with this upholstery vinyl that I used--NOT an ST product!) So, to try to secure the seams flat, I did some hack-embroidery on it! My sister loved it so much, I gave it to her!
We absolutely love hearing how much fun you had with the Back to Basics Tote—and yes, the fact that it’s currently free is such a bonus! Your creative solution with hack-embroidery to tame those rolling seams is brilliant, especially with upholstery vinyl. That kind of ingenuity is what makes handmade bags so special. It is so very pretty.
And how sweet that you gave it to your sister! We’d love to see your next version, especially with topstitching embroidery added—sounds like it’ll be another stunner.

sallie tomato
Hey friend! I'm Jess, the Founder of Sallie Tomato. I originally opened my shop in 2014 during college. I began by selling items that I had sewn myself. It wasn’t until 2016 that I released my first pattern, the Puppy Pillow. Now, my passion is to design quality sewing patterns, so you can create too!
Sallie Tomato provides sewing patterns, purse hardware, handbag zippers, cork fabric, and select sewing supplies for bag making.

The name of my shop developed around my middle name, Sallie. Also, the tomato pin cushion is a well-recognized symbol of sewing. Thank you for visiting my website!
