An Advanced Technique for Dramatic Design Details
By now in our Show Off Your Zippers Series, you’ve seen how decorative zipper tape can transform a bag.
We started with classic interior zipper applications, then moved to placing zippers on the right side of fabric and sewing them directly into straight seams. Each technique builds on the last, helping you highlight decorative zipper tape in more creative ways.
For the next post in the series, we’re exploring the most advanced technique yet.
This method places the zipper into a curved seam, allowing the decorative zipper tape to follow the natural shape of the bag. The result is a bold design line that flows with the bag’s silhouette while showcasing the beautiful printed tape.
Curved seam applications work especially well with the newest Tula Pink Legendary Zipper Collection for Sallie Tomato, where vibrant printed tape adds personality to every curve of the design!
Create Flowing Design Lines With Curved Zippers
Curved seams appear in many bag designs, especially belt bags, crossbodies, and fashion handbags.
Instead of hiding the zipper inside those seams, this technique allows the zipper tape to remain visible while following the curve of the bag. The zipper becomes part of the design while still functioning as part of the bag’s construction.
Using decorative zipper tape along curved seams can:
emphasize the shape of the bag
create bold design lines
add color and contrast to curved panels
give the project a modern, designer-inspired look
When paired with vibrant zipper collections like Tula Pink Legendary Zippers for Sallie Tomato, curved zipper seams become a standout detail.
Projects That Showcase Seam-Applied Zippers
Curved zipper techniques work best on projects where the zipper naturally follows the shape of the bag. Two patterns that work beautifully with this technique are Ferris and Fifth Avenue.
Ferris
The Ferris pattern is a fully lined belt bag available in three sizes.
Because the zipper follows the curved shape of the bag, this pattern is a natural fit for decorative zipper tape. When you use a printed zipper like those from the Tula Pink collections, the zipper becomes a bold design feature that frames the entire bag.
Ferris is also a great option for sewists who enjoy modern, hands-free accessories.
Fifth Avenue
The Fifth Avenue belt bag offers another great opportunity to experiment with curved zipper techniques.
Its simple structure makes it approachable while still allowing the zipper to become the focal point of the design. Adding decorative zipper tape enhances the curved opening and adds visual interest to the finished bag.
Sew a Zipper Into a Curved Bag Seam
Curved seams require a little more control than straight seams, but the process is very similar. We've outlined the general steps below to help you get started.
If you'd like to see this technique demonstrated step-by-step, we’ve created an exclusive video tutorial available inside our YouTube Membership! It's a great resource for visual learners (like me!) and includes additional tips for achieving smooth curves, preventing puckers, and creating a professional finish. Join our membership to access this tutorial and many more advanced bag-making techniques!
Step 1: Choose a Pattern With a Gentle Curve
Look for patterns with smooth, gradual curves rather than sharp angles. Gentle curves are easier to sew and allow the zipper tape to follow the shape naturally.
Step 2: Prepare the Zipper
Cut the zipper to the required length and install the zipper pull before sewing.
Make sure the zipper extends slightly past the seam allowance so it can be captured securely during construction.
Step 3: Position the Zipper Along the Curve
Place the zipper tape along the curved edge of the first fabric piece.
Use clips or tape to hold the zipper in place while shaping it along the curve.
Step 4: Stitch Slowly Along the Curve
Using a zipper foot, stitch the zipper to the curved edge.
Sew slowly and guide the zipper gently so it follows the curve smoothly without puckering.
Step 5: Attach the Second Fabric Panel
Align the second curved fabric panel with the opposite side of the zipper tape and stitch the seam.
The zipper will now connect both curved edges of the bag.
Cut small slits into the seam allowance around the curves to help relax the fabric and zipper.
Step 6: Press and Topstitch
Press the seam allowance away from the zipper and topstitch along the seam to stabilize the curve and create a clean finish.
Step 7: Continue Constructing the Bag
Finish assembling the bag according to your pattern instructions.
Once complete, the zipper will follow the curved design line of the bag while highlighting the decorative zipper tape!
Tips for a Clean, Professional Finish
Curved seams require a little extra attention to detail.
Sew slowly
Taking your time helps the zipper follow the curve smoothly.
Use clips instead of pins
Clips allow the zipper tape to adjust along the curve without distorting the fabric.
Ease the zipper tape as needed
Gently guide the tape so it lays smoothly along the curved edge.
Topstitch carefully
Even topstitching helps stabilize the seam and keeps the curve looking clean and polished.
Decorative Zippers Designed for Bag Makers
The Tula Pink Legendary Zipper Collections for Sallie Tomato were created specifically with bag makers in mind.
They feature:
bold printed zipper tape
durable nylon coils
smooth-gliding zipper pulls
vibrant colors that coordinate beautifully with Tula Pink fabrics
Because the artwork runs along the zipper tape itself, these zippers turn functional closures into eye-catching design elements.
Curved seam techniques allow those designs to flow naturally with the shape of the bag.
