Let your imagination set sail with this easy-to-create appliqué designed by Renee Kapitanski. Inspired by classic nautical elements, the Mariner’s Compass design brings movement, color, and a sense of adventure to any handmade project. It is a beautiful way to add a focal point to your bag while still keeping the process approachable and fun.
This tutorial is part of our series focused on creative embellishments that help you get even more out of your materials. The appliqué adds pops of color to any project and even better, it provides a perfect use for small pieces of nonwoven fabrics you’ve saved from other projects. Whether you are working with cork, faux leather, or other specialty materials, this is a satisfying way to turn scraps into something eye catching and unique.

1. Select your project
First measure the project pattern piece. Check that the Mariner’s Compass design will fit well within the seam allowances.
2. Prepare your applique pieces
Place the template pieces, printed side up on the wrong side of your selected applique fabrics.
Trace along the outer edge of each pattern piece. Then cut out the pieces following the lines.
3. Mark your project
On the right side of your project, mark a centered vertical and horizontal line that bisect each other in the middle.
Mark a second set of bisecting lines, centered between the first set.
4. Position applique pieces
With right sides up, position one Piece A along the right-hand side of every other marked line with the long-angled edges pointing away from the center. Hold in place with basting tape, glue or spray.
Repeat the step, positioning one Piece B directly opposite of each Piece A, aligning the longest straight edges together. (photo 8)
Repeat the steps, nesting the Pieces C and D very close to the Pieces A and B. (photo 9)
Topstitch 1/8" from all the edges. (photo 10)
5. Complete your project following your pattern.
