A slouchy tote is one of those bags that feels effortless but polished at the same time. It carries everything you need, works with almost any outfit, and transitions easily from work to travel to everyday errands.
The Aurora Slouchy Tote Pattern was designed to do exactly that — with the flexibility to sew it in quilting cotton, cork, faux leather, or even a quilted panel.

The video tutorial walks step-by-step through construction, zipper installation, boxed corners, and strap assembly so you can achieve a professional finish.
Sew It Classic — or Turn It Into a Quilted Tote
One of Aurora’s strengths is versatility.
Option 1: A Classic Slouchy Tote
If you prefer a clean, minimalist look:
Use quilting cotton, canvas, or denim with interfacing
Pair with cork or faux leather for the straps or the base
Add a webbing crossbody strap for contrast and durability
The simple construction makes it an excellent first zippered tote project.
Option 2: A Quilted Slouchy Tote
Aurora also works beautifully as a quilted tote bag!
We created a version using HollyAnne of String & Story’s Lanterns of Hope Quilt – Spring/Summer Colorway cheater panel and coordinated it with our Mason Bags Pattern for a cohesive set.
Using a cheater panel allows you to focus on quilting rather than piecing, making it a wonderful entry point into free motion quilting.
A helpful tip:
If you plan to use your quilted fabric for a bag, you don’t need to add backing fabric during practice. Layer your panel with batting, quilt it, and then cut your Aurora pattern pieces directly from that quilted fabric. The bag lining will function as the backing inside the finished project.
It’s an efficient way to turn quilting practice into something functional and beautiful.
Growing Confidence in Free Motion Quilting
If you want to strengthen your quilting skills, learning from an educator who specializes in free motion techniques makes a significant difference!
HollyAnne’s Quilting Rockstar University provides structured, step-by-step instruction designed to help quilters:
Build confidence on their home sewing machines
Learn free motion and ruler quilting techniques
Save money on longarm services
Finish quilt tops from start to finish
Inside, you’ll find courses, quilt-a-longs, and a supportive community representing quilters at every skill level. If finishing your own quilts has felt out of reach, her platform is designed to change that.
Tips for Reducing Bulk in a Quilted or Structured Tote
Whether you choose a classic or quilted version, managing bulk is key to a refined result.
Choose the Right Batting or Interfacing
Low-loft batting or lightweight stabilizers provide structure without stiffness allowing for a slouchy silhouette.
Trim and Grade Seam Allowances
Particularly around boxed corners and zipper seams.
Use Structured Materials for Straps
Instead of traditional fabric straps, consider:
This reduces thickness while elevating the design.
Press Intentionally
Steam and flatten seams before topstitching to create crisp lines and professional detail.
Elevating the Details
Aurora’s simplicity makes it the perfect foundation for high-end finishes.
Hardware
All required hardware is included in our 1-1/2" Level 3 Basic Hardware Kit.
Optional upgrades include:
Zipper
The pattern requires a 24" single slide zipper.
Our faux metal zippers by the yard provide the polished look of metal with the ease of sewing nylon — giving your bag a professional appearance without added difficulty.
Pair quilted cotton with cork or faux leather accents and coordinated hardware to create depth, texture, and a boutique-level finish!
Why the Slouchy Tote Remains a Favorite
The slouchy tote continues to be popular because it’s practical and wearable. It offers:
Generous interior space

It works equally well in bold prints, soft neutrals, quilted panels, or structured solids.
Aurora was designed to grow with your skills. Your first version might be straightforward and classic. Your next might feature quilting, cork accents, or statement hardware.
That progression is part of the creative journey!
