SUPER MARIO BROS
This is the perfect last minute costume since all you need are overalls, a long-sleeved shirt, hat and some scraps of fabric to put together these nostalgic outfits! Head to the thrift shop to find the clothes. Then, download the free mustache templates (linked below).
I cut the "M" and "L" free-hand from cork fabric, and hot glued each letter to a hat. I cut the mustaches from faux leather and hot glued a piece of elastic thread to each end. See the complete list of supplies below!
Materials & Supplies You'll Need:
- Download the Free Templates Here
- We recommend cork fabric, faux leather, microsuede or any other fabric that doesn't fray for this project. You'll need a few scraps of your desired colors.
-
Elastic - choose the width of the elastic depending on if you want a thin or wide strap. You'll need 1/3 yard for a child’s sized mask, or 3/8 yard for an adult sized mask.
-
Helpful notions include: scissors, polyester thread (Sulky Poly Deco), sewing clips (Sallie Tomato Sewing Clips), pins, chalk or removable pen, Teflon foot, permanent markers
PETER PAN & WENDY
All this costume takes is a little bit of fabric, thrifted clothes, and pixie dust! See imagination light up within your little ones eyes as they wear this special costume on a journey to Neverland!
I had the green pants at home, and then I thrifted this green polo, which I cut triangles out of the sleeves and bottom hem to look like Peter Pan's shirt. I DIYed the hat and belt. There are some sewing steps, but feel free to skip those and use hot glue to hold together instead! See the list of materials needed below!
Materials & Supplies You'll Need:
- For the hat, I downloaded this Free Template here.
- We recommend cork fabric, faux leather, microsuede or any other fabric that doesn't fray for this project. You'll need 1/2 yard of Brown for the hat and belt, and a scrap of Red for the feather, or your desired colors.
-
Helpful notions include: scissors, polyester thread (Sulky Poly Deco), sewing clips (Sallie Tomato Sewing Clips), pins, chalk or removable pen, Teflon foot
For the Belt, cut a 3" by 25" strip of brown fabric. With wrong sides together, fold the strip in half lengthwise. Use sewing clips to hold the fold. Topstitch 1/8" from each lengthside of the strip. A Teflon foot will help sew over tacky fabrics. Then, thread one end of the belt through both d-rings. Fold about 1-1/2" of the belt onto itself, with the flat side of the rings against the inner folded edge. Topstitch belt end in place, being careful to not stitch through the hardware.
For the Hat, cut two pieces of brown fabric, one mirroring the other. With right sides together, sew along the top angled edges with 1/8" seam allowance. Turn the hat right side out. Sew 1/8" from short vertical edges. Fold the back of hat up, so the start of the vertical seam is at the bottom edge of the hat and hot glue in place. For the feather, I cut a piece free-handed in the shape of a feather and cut fringe spaced about 1/4" apart. Then, I hot glued it to one side of the hat. I think this costume turned out adorable!

TEENAGE MUNTANT NINJA TURTLES
This one is for all of the ninja-loving dudes and dudettes! With the recent premiere of 'Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Mutant Mayhem,' of course I had to design a turtle-inspired costume mask! Look lean, green and mean in this easy DIY that takes minutes to put together!
Similar to the superhero masks, I gathered an assortment of scraps and cut them free-hand to make the applique, using the top and bottom of the mask template as a guide. Hot glue the pieces together, glue on an elastic strap, and your mask is ready for action!

BARBIE
The general consciences is - either you loved the movie or you didn't like it at all. It was certainly a captivating film, and has caught the attention of social media influencers and fashion brands across the world. Barbie aesthetic has been fun to incorporate into recent sewing projects such as our Jessica Baguette bag release and this adorable Barbie-inspired circle bag (a Free pattern), made by one of our customers! Make your own "Barbie" bag using Fuchsia Faux Leather or bright fabrics to carry as a costume accessory or everyday statement bag!
THE LITTLE MERMAID
Although these projects require sewing, I had to include a pattern round-up inspired by the recent premiere of 'The Little Mermaid.' This Halloween, adorn your mermaid-inspired costume with a handmade bag! This round-up includes bags that are both big and small, while beachy and glitzy!
- From right to left, top to bottom, first we're featuring the Rita wristlet sewn in the eye-catching Unicorn Leather! This fabric's sparkly and scaly texture is unique and mermaid-like. It's a holographic vinyl, that is perfect for the Rita pattern since the pattern edges are left raw edge. This construction technique results in a minimalist, sleek look.
- The Kelly cinch bag looks elegant in sequins. The silver sparkle reminds me of glistening water and waves.
- The Carrie baguette bag features iconic purple sequins, which would match Ariel's seashells or Ursula's aura.
- And lastly, our Sandy tote bag pattern is perfect for a day at the beach, pool side, or park! This roomy tote, can hold everything you need!
I hope you enjoyed this simple project round-up, and are inspired to DIY your next costume accessories! Let us know in the comments if you'd like to see other customer ideas! Until next time, have a spooky sewing day!
