Size #5 zipper is best used on the top of handbags, backpacks, totes, laptop carriers, pockets, and more. Size #3 zipper is best used for interior zippers or small projects such as wallets, wristlets, and accessories.

Zippers by the Yard will help you save money and time! Cut the length of zipper you need, when you need it, for minimal waste. Also, use Zippers by the Yard to create single or double slide zippers of any length. Double slide zippers open from the middle out, which is ideal for luggage style bags, bowler bags, handbags, backpacks and more.
Coordinate the zipper tape color with your fabric and match the nylon coil color with your bag hardware! Not only are zippers functional, but they can also be used for decorative accents. Use them for closures, pockets, expandable areas, and more.
- Size: choose between #3 coil with 1” wide tape, or #5 coil with 1-1/4” tape, by length of zipper purchased in 1 yard increments (without pulls) or a 3 yard package (with rectangle pulls)

Recommended Needle: A 80/12 universal needle is recommended, with a stitch length of 2.5mm for construction and 3-3.5mm for topstitching.

Recommended Thread: 40 wt polyester thread
- Recommended Presser Foot: A zipper foot or narrow foot is extremely helpful when sewing with this product.
- Ironing: Use a medium to high setting while avoiding touching the coil for a long period of time; but also reference the recommended ironing settings for the fabric type the zipper is being attached to.
Sallie Tomato Zippers can be purchased by the yard (zipper tape only, no pulls) OR in a 3 yard pack with 9 rectangle zipper pulls! If applicable, make sure to choose either #3 or #5 size tape, depending on your preference!
If ordering by the yard, the quantity you order will be the yardage you receive. You will have to purchase your pulls separately
Watch a video tutorial for using zippers by the yard here! The zipper pulls will not be attached to the zipper tape in the package. You can easily attach the pulls as needed by simply sliding the rounded end (with two openings) onto the end of the tape. Do this by inserting each side of the zipper chain into each side of the pull, and carefully lining up the ends so they are even. Then, slide the pull onto the tape. I recommend to mark the desired length of your zipper, then stitch each end before cutting.
Zippers by the yard are very easy to use, so please don’t be discouraged if your coil doesn’t line up perfectly on the first try! With a bit of practice, you’ll realize just how easy they are to use!
Zipper by the yard is a length of zipper that can be cut to multiple zippers at a specific size, and can contain a single slider or double sliders. Often, both ends of the zipper by the yard need to be sewn into a seam to prevent the slider from coming off the tape. Parts and tools can be purchased to convert zippers by the yard into closed end and separating zippers, but the process can be tedious, and we currently do not offer these parts. This type of zipper is commonly used for bags and select apparel.
