Great pattern! Thorough instructions, didn’t have to look at the tutorial. The most challenging part is doing the final assembly and binding as there are lots of layers to go through. Not difficult to understand but I did break a sweat trying to manhandle everything.
So happy to hear this Jenny. Love seeing all the pictures that you provided. lf not a member yet- we have a great Facebook group-Sallie Tomato Patterns and Hardware group to join to show off your makes and more inspiration. Happy Sewing!
This bag is so cute!
Full disclosure: this is the first bag I've attempted. And I'm only a beginner. My great-grandmother taught me the basics when I was a girl, but if you look closely I'm clumsy with the machine and my stitches. (And shame on me, I broke a needle there at the end.) But dang it if this bag isn't super cute. I love this pattern!
The fabric I chose is a cotton canvas, inside and out. I designed it and had it printed. (It's me, my husband and our fur babies.)
The pattern instructions were ok for me to follow, along with the video tutorial. Thank you for that. I didn't understand the binding bit, which I think that is more my newbie status than the instructions. And I got too excited to finish it!
This bag was challenging! But I did it!! It took about two days.
I don't know if this is me being silly but I didn't see a measurement for piece I, so I kinda winged it there by making it about the length of H (14 inches) by 2 3/4 inches.
Thank you Megan for your review of the pattern. You are to be commended for trying this pattern and learning so much. Just take your time and you will do fine-I am sure that your Great Grandmother is a wonderful teacher for you. The pattern piece for 'I' is on page 5 for future reference. Also-if not a member- we have a great Facebook group-Sallie Tomato Patterns and Hardware group to join to show off your makes and more inspiration. Happy Sewing!
I found this a quick and well-written pattern. I did add a padded slip pocket to the inside so I could also carry my ipad. Love the finished product in pink leather and quilting cotton.
Thank you for your praises. We are glad that you found it easy to make. Please like our Youtube channel so you do not miss out on new tutorials as well as I recommend joining our Sallie Tomato Patterns and Hardware group for more inspiration
Great bag pattern with simple to follow directions and also a You Tube tutorial. This is marked as an intermediate-so middle of the scale-just take your time and READ those directions :)

This is the most challenging bag I've made thus far. I always learn new things with your patterns. But the tutorials are great! These patterns are very reasonably priced given the fact that you provide such detailed tutorials.
On the Jess Oklaroots "A Proper Laptop Bag For Everyone! Let's Make The Morning Post From Sallie Tomato", she was using a light tan fabric that looked similar to the foam, so I put it together wrong! My fault that I didn't listen and follow the pattern instructions well enough. I also had difficulty with the bias binding, which I have never used before. My exterior fabric is thick, so I think it took up more binding than a thinner fabric, so it didn't fully cover all the seam on the opposite side of the seam. Future reference, I would make the bias binding a little wider if I was working with a thicker exterior fabric again. I added embroidered pockets to the front of the pockets because I had already done the embroidery on a different fabric. In order to accommodate the embroidered pockets, I had to lengthen the bag bottom 1" and shorten the top of the bag 1", but that worked out fine. So this bag has 4 outside pockets and I added a zipper pocket to the lining. Thanks for another great pattern!

Who we are
sallie tomato
Hey friend! I'm Jess, the Founder of Sallie Tomato. I originally opened my shop in 2014 during college. I began by selling items that I had sewn myself. It wasn’t until 2016 that I released my first pattern, the Puppy Pillow. Now, my passion is to design quality sewing patterns, so you can create too!
Sallie Tomato provides sewing patterns, purse hardware, handbag zippers, cork fabric, and select sewing supplies for bag making.
The name of my shop developed around my middle name, Sallie. Also, the tomato pin cushion is a well-recognized symbol of sewing. Thank you for visiting my website!
