Merry & Bright Garland Tutorial

Create a cheery garland in your favorite colors using our Free Pattern download for fun light bulb ornaments. This is a great project for using small pieces of Cork, Faux Leather, or other non-woven fabrics.

SEWING INSTRUCTIONS

1. Optional: Add surface embellishments or embroidery to Main Fabric Pieces A, B, or C. 

1. Optional: Center one fleece or stabilizer Piece A, B, or C on the Wrong Side of one of a paired Main Pieces A, B, or C. Hold the fleece in place with basting tape or basting glue.

Adding this layer of fleece or stabilizer helps create dimension.

1. With Right Side Up, place the remaining Piece A, B, or C over the fleece. Hold the layers together with basting tape, glue, or sewing clips. 

1. Topstitch the outer edges with 1/8" allowance. 

You can easily make this a no-sew project by using permanent craft glue instead of sewing.

1. Optional: Have fun adding extra color to the cut edges with colored pens, markers, sparkly fabric paints, or glue. (A perfect way to ‘hide’ the darkened edges produced by laser cutting.)

1. With Wrong Sides Together, fold one Contrast Piece D over the top narrow end of a topstitched Piece A, B, or C and align all edges of Piece D. Hold Piece D in place with basting tape or glue. 

1. Topstitch raw edges of Piece D with 1/8" allowance, stitch straight across at the top fold edge with 1/4" allowance, creating a small casing near the fold. 

1. Thread the completed ornaments onto the length of twine, string, or ribbon. 

A large-eyed tapestry needle can be helpful in pulling the twine/ribbon through the ornament casing.

1. Position the connector fold of each ornament evenly spaced, beginning and ending about 4" - 6" from ends of twine. Optional: Glue each ornament in place with permanent craft glue. 

1. Tie a knotted loop at opposite ends of the twine to create a hanging loop. Or, simply tape the garland ends in place.
