I think you’ll enjoy how simple this project is to make; you can choose to make it low-sew or no-sew. This project pairs well with most of the Sallie Tomato pattern line!
Today's project features smaller pieces of Webbing or Strapping and our favorite non-wovens: Cork, Faux Leather, or Microsuede. The finished size of your Webbing Keychain will range from 1" - 2" (2.5cm -5cm) wide and 3" - 6-3/4" (7.6cm - 17.1cm) long, depending on the piece of webbing & hardware you use. Let’s get started!
PLEASE NOTE: The free pattern associated with this blog is featured in the 2024 Advent Box. All purchasers of the 2024 Advent Box will have the pattern with the yardage, cutting instructions and templates (if applicable). If you do not have the free pattern for this blog, it will be released in July 2025.
MATERIALS & SUPPLIES
- Main Fabric: Cork, Faux Leather, Microsuede or other nonwoven
- Webbing or Strapping
- Scissors
- 40wt Polyester Thread
- Sewing Clips
- Basting Tape
- Stiletto
- Zipper foot or Teflon Foot
- Hot Glue Gun and glue sticks
- Edge Kote
1. Follow the cutting instructions, included in the Free Pattern Download. This first step is optional: Edge-Kote the cut edges of the Main Fabric Connector Tab, sealing the raw edges. Be sure to check out our blog post dated January 19, 2024 for a tutorial on Mixing and Applying Edge Kote Colors.
2. Fold the Webbing piece Wrong Sides Together, meeting raw ends, trim the ends even, if needed. Baste, tape, or glue ends together.
3. Thread the Connector Tab through the d-ring or desired hardware.
4. Center the Webbing loop on the wrong side of the Connector Tab, about 3/4" (1.9cm) from the narrow middle indent. Hold in place with basting tape, glue, or sewing clips.
6. For a no-sew option, apply a line of hot glue on the Wrong Side of the Connector Tab near the cut edges. Keep the glue about 1/4" (6mm) away from the Connector Tab fold. Press down with your fingers to adhere the raw edges together. Use sewing clips to help hold the layers while glue sets.
7. Attach your key ring to the d-ring of your new Webbing Keychain!
