Cork Fabric 101: Everything You Need to Know to Get Started

Cork fabric is a natural material with a similar handle to leather or vinyl, but it’s much easier to cut and sew. It’s soft, smooth, pliable, and luxurious to the touch, yet it stands out for its incredible versatility. Here are just a few reasons makers love cork fabric:

Cork fabric originates primarily from Spain, Portugal, and France, where the cork oak tree thrives. The process begins by carefully harvesting the bark without harming the tree, which regenerates its bark every nine years. After drying for at least six months, the cork is boiled, sterilized, and pressed into blocks. These blocks are then shaved into thin sheets and adhered to a fabric backing, creating the smooth and pliable cork fabric we know and love.

The highest-quality cork fabrics feature either a woven backing or a microsuede backing, ensuring flexibility and durability. Nonwoven backings, while available from other suppliers, tend to crack over time due to stiffness and lack of elasticity, making them less ideal for long-lasting projects.

Working with cork fabric is easier than you might think, especially with the right tools:

• Needles: Microtex Size 80/12 or 90/14 needles work best for clean, precise stitches.

• Cutting Tools: Use a dedicated rotary cutter and scissors to keep your tools sharp.

• Basting Tape/Glue: Perfect for holding seams, positioning zippers, and creating straps.

• Sewing Clips: Avoid pins, which leave permanent holes, and use clips instead.

• Marking Tools: Use a removable marking utensil for pattern tracing.

• Stitch Length: Set your machine to a 2.5-3mm stitch length for piecing and 3-4mm for topstitching.

• Machine Settings: Lower tension and foot pressure when sewing through multiple layers.

• Thread: Use 40-50 weight thread for strong seams and smooth topstitching.

• Special Feet: A Teflon foot, walking foot, or compensating foot helps glide through layers easily.
