Hey there! I’m Jess from Sallie Tomato. Normally on our blog, we teach sewing tutorials, but for this project, we’re getting crafty! I’m going to walk you through the process of how to use Faux Leather Fabric to make a woven headboard.
This is a no-sew project which can be completed in a weekend, or a few evenings. I was inspired by a piece I saw from Pottery Barn, but was shocked by the price tag! I knew I could make my own for a fraction of the cost and share the process of what we did, so you could make your own too!

The free instructions include cutting instructions and measurements for positioning the woven strips for the following standard size beds: King, California King, Queen, Full, and Twin.
MATERIALS & SUPPLIES
- (3) 8 foot 2” by 2” boards - See included tips below on “Understanding Nominal vs. Actual Measurements of Dimensional Lumber.” We chose Red Oak for this project. Pine is a more economical option, but you’ll need to put in some more time for the finishing work. When selecting the boards, make sure they are not bowed. Also, they may need to be sanded because pine boards tend to have rough cut edges. You can certainly use whichever type of lumber you want.

- Rotary Cutter, Ruler, and Cutting Mat
- King: 4-1/4 yards
- Cal King: 4-1/8 yards
- Queen: 3-3/4 yards
- Full: 3-5/8 yards
- Twin: 2-1/4 yards
Understanding Nominal vs. Actual Measurements of Dimensional Lumber
If you are new to buying lumber for craft and home decor projects, it’s important to understand how wood is sold. The term “dimensional lumber” means the wood is cut to a specific length, width, and depth. However, there are differences between the nominal dimensions and actual dimensions of softwood lumber and hardwood lumber. If you’re a novice, like me, when it comes to woodworking, this website is super helpful for understanding how to purchase lumber, and I’ve also included some basic examples below since this is a very basic project.
Nominal Size 2” x 2” (This number is the size before the lumber has been finished)
Actual Size 1-1/2” x 1-1/2” (This number is the size after the lumber has been finished)

Are you ready for the big reveal? Check out the before and after photos of my bedroom makeover, and DIY Woven Headboard. This project was so much fun! Incorporating wood and fabric with metallic decor and greenery brought warmth, texture, and life to this room.
We mounted gold metal sconces (which I found on Amazon) to the wall, and hid the power cord with a painted cord cover I purchased from our local home improvement store.
I found a vintage clock from Target with a leather strap to tie in the faux leather fabric from the headboard. I added an artificial tree to the corner of the room for some natural color - which also hides a spot that Jax accidentally painted! No one will ever know, right?
Our window treatments were lacking so I hung beige curtains with bamboo blinds (which I also found on Amazon) for a cozy, high end look. I actually found the blinds before I finished the headboard so I chose a stain to match the blinds. I love mixing wood tones, but a rule of thumb is to have one dominant wood tone, with a secondary wood tone. Our dominant wood tone is our doors and trim. Our secondary wood tone is our existing furniture, so I wanted to make sure the blinds and headboard matched to tie the room together.
And there you have it. I’m in LOVE with the results! It’s been fun to share this transformation with you. Simply adding paint, a focal point, and a few decorations completely changed the aesthetic of the room, and my mood in the space. Design can have a major influence on your emotions and feelings.
