Meet the Terry Crossbody Bag

Terry is designed to be roomy enough for your everyday essentials while still maintaining an easy-to-wear crossbody silhouette.

The finished bag measures approximately 11-1/2" wide by 9" high by 1-1/2" deep. Its contoured shape creates a soft, rounded silhouette, while the tapered gusset adds even more shape and dimension to the finished bag.

Inside and out, you'll find thoughtful storage features to help keep your essentials organized. The recessed zipper adds security without taking away from the clean look of the bag, while the adjustable strap lets you customize the fit.

Then there are those flaps!

Terry includes three different flap shapes, so you can change the personality of your bag whenever you want.

Three Flaps, So Many Possibilities

The interchangeable flap is the star of Terry.

The pattern includes three flap shapes, each giving the same bag a noticeably different look. Keep things classic with a simple solid, coordinate your flap with your favorite outfit, or make several so you can switch your bag with the seasons.

And these flaps were made for creativity.

The pattern specifically encourages makers to experiment with patchwork, embroidery, and other surface designs to create unique versions of each flap.

Try combining cork with quilting cotton, turn treasured scraps into a patchwork flap, add machine embroidery, or choose a bold print that becomes the focal point of the entire bag.

This is also a fun way to use smaller pieces of special fabrics you've been saving. Instead of committing them to an entire bag, let them shine on one interchangeable flap.

Choose Fabrics That Fit Your Style

Terry gives you lots of room to mix materials and textures.

For the main fabric, the pattern recommends quilt cotton, canvas, denim, or linen. For the contrast fabric, you can reach for cork fabric, faux leather, or another nonwoven material. Your accent fabric can be any fabric you'd like, making those interchangeable flaps a perfect opportunity to experiment.

For the lining, Turtle Tex, quilt cotton, or linen are recommended.

You can keep your bag cohesive with coordinating colors or create completely different flap designs for maximum versatility.

A denim body with cork accents can give Terry a casual everyday feel, while faux leather and a bold, printed flap can create an entirely different look. That's the fun of this design: your fabric choices can make Terry feel completely your own.

Seamless Contoured Shape

During construction, the middle portion of the gusset is tapered before being attached around the curved exterior pieces. The pattern even notes that this tapering adds an interesting shape to the finished bag.

When it's time to sew around those curves, don't rush. Sewing clips can help keep everything aligned, while small snips along the gusset seam allowance can help the fabric ease smoothly around the bottom curves. A stiletto can also be helpful for guiding the layers as you sew.

Sewing Tip: Curves are much friendlier when you slow down. Stop with your needle down whenever you need to adjust your layers and continue a few stitches at a time.

Keep Everything Secure With a Recessed Zipper

Terry's recessed zipper gives the bag a polished finish while helping keep everything safely tucked inside.

The zipper is constructed separately using lining pieces before being attached to the top edges of the lining. The pattern also gives you the option to finish the closed end with either a metal zipper end or a coordinating fabric zipper tab.

It's one of those details that makes a handmade bag feel extra finished while still leaving room to choose the look you love.

Pockets Inside and Out

Terry includes an exterior slip pocket built right into the back of the bag. It's positioned over the exterior back before the bag is assembled, creating easy-access storage without interrupting the clean silhouette.

You'll also make a curved interior slip pocket, giving you another spot to organize smaller essentials.

Keys, your phone, lip balm, and all those little things that normally disappear to the bottom of your bag finally have somewhere to go.

Make the Strap Work for You

Terry includes an adjustable crossbody strap so you can customize how the finished bag sits.

You'll create the strap, add a slider buckle and swivel hooks, and attach it to the D-ring connectors on the bag. You can also add small rivets to reinforce the strap ends if desired.

Coordinate your strap with your flap for a polished look or use a contrasting material to add another layer of personality.

One Bag, Endless Personality

Terry is the kind of pattern that keeps the creativity going long after you've finished sewing the bag itself.

Start with a versatile body you love, then create interchangeable flaps for different seasons, outfits, moods, or occasions. Keep one classic, make another colorful, add embroidery to the next, and finally use those scraps you've been saving for a patchwork version.

With a roomy shape, useful pockets, secure recessed zipper, adjustable strap, and interchangeable design, Terry is ready to become a new everyday favorite.
